YDSA expands coding inspections and certifications

The YDSA (Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association) has announced that it has increased the extent of its coding and certification services. The YDSA Certifying Authority is now able to undertake coding inspections and certifications on behalf of the Jersey Register.

It has also been given authority to include the Fitness For Purpose (FFP) coding required by the new Canal and River Trust (formerly British Waterways) for inland waterways workboats and commercial freight vessels in the UK in its range of services.  FFP implements a clear system for inspecting older vessels in order to ensure there are no significant, visible risks to safety.

The YDSA Certifying Authority is appointed by the MCA, and issues certificates under the codes. The new authorisation will enable the Authority to undertake coding inspections and certification for vessels under 24m (load line length) for commercial use on behalf of the Jersey Register.

Charles Rossiter, Certifying Authority chairman said, “We currently have almost 2,000 vessels on our active register, and over 60 highly experienced surveyors authorised by the YDSA Coding Association to work on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

“We’re delighted to be able to extend our professional services to vessels flagged in Jersey and to be working in conjunction with the Jersey register”.

David Lowe, chairman of the Commercial Boat Operators Association said, “Many of our association’s members have had long standing dealings with YDSA surveyors, and we are very pleased that they are now able to assist with FFP certification.”
