A 44-metre (144-foot) superyacht has collided with a pier in Tauranga, New Zealand after a “captain error”.
Alloy Yachts-built sailing superyacht Encore – valued at $50 million – had just undergone painting in Tauranga, New Zealand at the city’s new marine precinct when the incident took place.
The damage occurred when the New Zealand-made yacht collided with a wooden pile while trying to depart from the facilities on 8th December.
Phil Wardale, precinct manager, said captain error was the cause of the incident.
"While departing to head back up to Auckland this morning the captain underestimated the tidal flow on the still incoming tide, and the yacht connected with a wooden pile at the end of Bridge Wharf," he said.
"It's an unfortunate accident and the yacht's captain is now assessing the damage to the vessel and next steps."
