Amphibious vehicles used by international Volvo Ocean Race teams

Spectators at the Volvo Ocean Race Auckland Stopover might have spotted something unusual moving around the harbour as two Volvo Ocean Race teams chose to use amphibious vessels from Sealegs to move them around during their recent trip.

Team Mapfre and Team Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing both made use of Sealegs’ amphibious technology during the Volvo Ocean Race in New Zealand recently, allowing them to enjoy the ability to drive straight from the harbour, up the slip to their working spaces. Race officials also used a Sealegs vessel to keep up with the action on the course.

James O’Mahoney of Team Abu Dhabi, commented, “The first time we went out, I was really impressed with the handling, the steering and ability in the waves. I was even more impressed that it could be driven up the slipway.”

With the Auckland Stopover delayed by several days from its original start time, the teams had extra scope to see what their Sealegs machines could do. Spectators on the water were treated to views of several of the vessels displaying some of the speed they’re known for as they followed the Volvo fleet out into the Hauraki Gulf.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 80km per hour on the water, Sealegs’ amphibious technology doesn’t hamper the vessels’ performance.

Supported by international distributors across the globe, Albany-based Sealegs has had great success with demonstrating its products on home soil. Visitors to New Zealand who’ve been impressed with the patented technology include the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince George who received a mini Sealegs created just for him, and now the Volvo Ocean Race teams.
