Australian yacht race Big Boat Challenge has been abandoned, for the first time in its 25-year history, due to welfare concerns surrounding the bushfire smoke.
The Big Boat Challenge traditionally preludes the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race, which commences 26th December.
Paul Billingham, commodore of Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, stated that it was a “difficult” decision to abandon the race.
He added, “Today we’ve seen the bushfires come to Sydney Harbour with a vengeance.
“The view was for the safety of our competitors, but more importantly the spectator craft out there; it would be irresponsible for us to run the race today.”
