Claasen yacht Lionheart wins J Class Falmouth Regatta

The Claasen-built sailing yacht, Lionheart, has become the overall winner of the J Class Falmouth Regatta, following her sixth and final race victory on Saturday, 27th June.

John Cutler, tactician of S/Y Lionheart said, “As a group we are really pleased to win on this tough race course. It is a spectacle which does not come around often and the boats are awesome.”

The race saw sailing yachts Ranger and Velsheda go head to head, however Lionheart ultimately beat Ranger by 42 seconds.

Tom Dodson, tactician of S/Y Velsheda's tactician summarised, "We got the starts we wanted and really we were just looking to be ahead of Lionheart in both races, but it did not work out.

“We had a good regatta though. But we learnt that we don't want to get in any kind of tacking duel with Lionheart. They accelerate so much faster but then you can't give them any leverage. Half way up both first beats we were ahead and you can't afford to let them go. You have to go and hook them back in. We are happy with winning three races in the regatta and feel we are making good progress and looking forwards to Cowes."

The Cowes J Class Regatta is scheduled to take place from Monday 27th to Friday 31st July, in and around the Solent. The event is also expected to include a clockwise round the island race, or coastal course of a similar distance. The J Class will race as a fleet under the JCA handicap rules, with two to three hour courses in and beyond the Solent, depending on conditions.

Lionheart, a 43.4m sailing yacht, is the first of a series of aluminium J-Class yachts, originally designed for the Ranger syndicate by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens.
