Gill Sailing Clothes ‘Beat Recession’ to Win Queen’s Award for Enterprise

Congratulations to Gill, the specialist technical marine clothing brand, which has been awarded the coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. The Queen’s Award is the most prestigious corporate accolade that a UK business can win.

Previous winners include Advertising Services Ltd (ASL), publisher of Yachting Pages, whose founder and Managing Director Steve Crowe personally collected the award from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2009.

The Queen’s Award is another great achievement for Gill, whose recent successes include building export sales to 75% of total revenue in the financial year ending September 2011.

Founder and Chairman Nick Gill commented that the award is “the result of many years hard work, growing the business and reinvesting for the future.”

"Export sales development has been at the centre of the successful and sustainable growth that we have seen in the business in recent years,” added Bryan Stewart, International Sales and Marketing Manager at Gill.

“To receive this prestigious award is a great honour as recognition of all the hard work of our team that has contributed to that success."

Gill has grown from humble origins to become one of the top three technical sailing clothing brands in the world today, and the biggest in the US.

The company was first formed by Nick Gill in 1975 in the corner of a lace factory in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England.

“We have built a reputation as the ‘technical Brand’,” said Nick of his success. “Twenty five per cent of the company works in product design and development, and the quality and innovation of the product range has contributed enormously to the success of the business.

“Additionally we have stuck to our core business and have not been distracted. We seemed to have sailed through the recession unscathed.”

Gill is also celebrating being confirmed as the technical clothing sponsor to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week for a further three years. Cowes Week is the oldest and most famous yachting regatta in the world, attended by top sailors from across the globe.

Gill’s clothing product range extends to all types of sailing and marine use. Its recent focuses include the keel boat racing sector and clothing for warmer climates to suit the growing export business.
