Kurt Strand Design reveals new 160m superyacht concept

Florida-based, Norwegian designer Kurt Strand Design has revealed its latest superyacht concept, the 160-metre (524-foot) sailing superyacht Florida.

With unique, solar panelled sails, Florida sets itself apart from other sailing yachts. When there is no wind, the sails can automatically adjust to an optimal angle against the sunrays, producing electric power, which is stored in the 5MW battery bank and can be used for on-board hydrogen production too.

The yacht also features a genset system, which reduces fossil fuel usage by up to 90% in comparison with other yachts of its kind.

Florida is engineered with two, side-by-side retractable keels with a stabiliser. The keels can be lifted individually to balance the yacht and create a more optimal angle for the sunrays to hit the solar panels. The retractable keels also allow the yacht to enter shallow waterways close to the coastline.

Florida can accommodate up to 24 guests in 12 luxury suites, along with 40 members of crew. She boasts a number of high-end features, such as a superyacht helipad on the foredeck with elevator to the hangar below deck, and a large swimming pool on the aft deck. Additionally, there is a beach club with a large selection of tenders, Jet Skis and water toys. Florida also includes a fitness centre, spa and cinema. All interior floors and carpentry are made from reclaimed wood and the vegan leather and exterior furniture are all made from recycled plastics.
