Superyacht Amels 212 is ‘World’s First’ Green Passport Recipient

Amels 212 has become the first superyacht in the world to be awarded a Green Passport by the Lloyds Register. The 65.50m vessel launched earlier this month in Vlissingen, Holland.

The Green Passport, an inventory of hazardous materials, was devised as a result of the Hong Kong International Convention of Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships 2009. The Lloyds Register assesses business products to internationally recognised standards.

The new recognition for Amels 212 is described as “ground-breaking” by OCEAN Management, a division of OCEAN independence which is one of the world’s largest yacht brokerage firms.

Qualification for the Green Passport required the yacht’s builders, Amels, to put together a highly-detailed list identifying and locating all the materials used in the boat’s construction.

“Fulfilling all the requirements of the Green Passport has entailed a very large effort from Amels over the past three years and also for all the suppliers and contractors involved in building Amels 212.

“Hopefully she will sail for more than a hundred years but, at the end of her life on the sea, her materials can be recycled in a controlled and environmentally-responsible manner.”

OCEAN Management’s project and management director David Küpfer hopes that the Green Passport will bring financial, as well as environmental, benefits.

“We also felt that this may enhance the resale value of Amels 212 as this passport is set to become compulsary for superyachts in the future.”
