Yachting pioneer Guy Couach passes away

Founding father of the French shipyard Couach Yachts, Guy Couach has passed away aged 88. Mr Couach, who died on 6th January, introduced boat building to his grandfather’s engine manufacturing company in 1946.

Born in 1926, Mr Couach established the mass production of composite yachts and famously built the first yacht made of Aramat, a composite material derived from Kevlar. From 1970 onwards, all Couach yachts, whatever size, were made from Aramat.

Mr Couach passed the company to his son in 1986.

A statement issued by Couach shipyard said, "With his departure goes a personality that has profoundly influenced the history of French yachting over the last 40 years. In the name of all the employees, saddened by this disappearance, the current management of the Couach shipyard would like to express its deepest sympathies to Guy’s family and loved ones. The company shares their grief and would like to show its support for the loss of the founding father of the shipyard that continues to bear his name today."
