Following on from the successful launch of SurfSonic in 2015, which culminated with a DAME award nomination and winning BMEEA Product of the Year, YachtSurfer has revealed it has had a busy few months supplying bonded internet upgrades for both new build yachts and winter retrofits.
They have just completed the supply and on-board commissioning of their largest bonded system to date, for a 40m superyacht based in the Mediterranean. The new yacht system features up to eight simultaneous internet sources bonded to form one single high-speed connection.
Jim Weir from YachtSurfer commented, “Even at her home berth, where there is no LTE coverage, the results are impressive, delivering both greater bandwidth, but critically improved stability and reliability.
“The SurfSonic system on board is our first deployment of our SonicExpander feature, providing the ability to add additional connections (in theory up to four thousand - but that needs a lot of SIM cards) for minimal cost.
“Once in 4G coverage, the system will provide the owner and their guests with enhanced bandwidth even in heavy contention locations at the height of the summer season.”
Jim Weir went on to highlight a growing trend in the industry, “We are seeing on board IPTV installations increase in popularity as a means of accessing both live and video-on-demand content from worldwide sources and that naturally leads to greater demand for upstream internet capacity on board yachts. However, in contrast with OTA or Sat TV viewing, IPTV streams suffer from buffering issues, which lead to huge user frustrations.
“With SurfSonic, we have the benefit of greater bandwidth from diverse operators and reduced contention, the reliability of a single public IP address at all times, and with our flexible ‘quality of service’ profiles we can ensure priority to streaming (or any other traffic) on a real-time, dynamic basis so you can say goodbye to buffering and get back to enjoying the movie or the big game.”
