Andrew Winch unveils new designs for Royal Yacht Britannia’s successor

Winch Design, a British-based studio, has released designs for a new yacht to succeed the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Andrew Winch chose to release the designs for a modern version of the Royal Yacht Britannia, after a campaign began to transform her into a floating embassy. The 150m design was commissioned by GEC Marine and has been debated in the House of Commons, however, foreign secretary Boris Johnson admitted funding for the new yacht was “not a priority” for the government.

The original Royal Yacht Britannia first began service in 1953, covering over one million nautical miles and 968 state voyages in her 44 years, until she was withdrawn from service in 1997.

As seen in the designs, the new yacht features a red hull with a white superstructure and navy topsides, representing the Union Jack flag. Standout features include a glass dome, a helipad located aft-deck, and a regal staircase to the central foyer. The Telegraph also reported that Winch said he approached the vessel as a ‘commercial ship rather than a private residence.’

Andrew Winch commented, “Our interior configuration for Britannia allows for the greatest flexibility so that the space is suitable for many purposes. The interior design is timeless and understated - a showcase for the best of British craftsmanship and design, both traditional and contemporary.”

Current estimates to create a modernised version of the yacht are around £100 million.
