UK marina Plymouth Yacht Haven has installed a Seabin to collect debris, plastics and microplastics from the water. It joins a handful of other British marinas that have adopted a Seabin to tackle ocean pollution.
Made from recyclable materials, Seabins draw water in before pumping it through a fine mesh and collecting the resulting waste in a basket. The Plymouth Yacht Haven team can then recycle the contents.
Steve Kitchen, marina director at Plymouth Yacht Haven, said, “Working and living by the water, we see first-hand the impact of marine litter and its effect on marine wildlife around Plymouth. Our marina staff took the initiative to introduce more initiatives to make our local environment cleaner and more sustainable for everyone, from litter picking on Mount Batten beach, to this new Seabin installation.”
Developed in Australia in 2016, there are almost 1,000 Seabins worldwide with this being the first permanently located in Plymouth. The device, which has a 20kg capacity, can capture more than 1.4 tonnes of debris per year.
